At Georgia Tech, Hammer's research aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms of bacterial cooperation and competition. The goal is to use this knowledge to manipulate bacterial behaviors that promote health. Hammer gave a TEDx  presentation on his work in 2016. 

Hammer teaches Molecular Microbiology, with help from vintage rock music. He also teaches the introductory Biology of Sex and Death course.

Hammer is the recipient of a prestigious CAREER award by the National Science Foundation and several teaching awards from Georgia Tech. Recently, the American Society of Microbiology named Hammer a Distinguished Lecturer. 

Hammer received a B.S. in Biology from Boston College and his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Michigan Medical School. Before joining Georgia Tech, he was a postdoctoral researcher in Princeton University.

When not on campus, Hammer enjoys rock climbing with his family.
