Visiting Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EAnne Benoit,\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003EProfessor and Associate Chair\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026Uuml;mit V. \u0026Ccedil;ataly\u0026uuml;rek\u003C\/strong\u003E, and Visiting Research Scientist II\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EBora U\u0026ccedil;ar\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Ewere involved in this year\u0026rsquo;s committee service for the symposium.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This year, we had a great Georgia Tech team leading the conference:\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EBora U\u0026ccedil;ar\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Ewas the general chair,\u0026nbsp;Anne Benoit\u0026nbsp;was the program chair, and I assisted as the program vice chair,\u0026rdquo; said \u0026Ccedil;ataly\u0026uuml;rek.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBenoit served in several other roles for the symposium. She spoke as part of a\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ipdps.org\/\u0022\u003Epanel of distinguished researchers about attracting those underrepresented in the parallel and distributed computing community\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and how to foster social changes. This women-led panel addressed the underrepresentation of women and other minority groups in tech fields, and the consequences of inequity in the scientific hierarchy. Benoit also led an invited talk at the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/hppac18\/\u0022\u003EHPPAC 18 workshop\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ETrade-offs Between Performance, Reliability, and Energy Consumption\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn conjunction with serving as program vice chair, \u0026Ccedil;ataly\u0026uuml;rek also served as the IEEE Computer Society TCPP Chair and was a keynote speaker for the HCW18 workshop,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hcw.eecs.wsu.edu\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EChallenges and Opportunities in Heterogeneous Computing \u0026ndash; Applications Perspective\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E. The workshop discussed the challenges of developing efficient, scalable, and maintainable applications for heterogeneous systems, and associated opportunities for systems researchers in the field.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;This was the first year we executed a new two-phase review system, which we believe helped to improve the quality of the technical program. The whole\u0026nbsp;technical program featured 113 papers, three great keynotes, 22 workshops, and a panel on diversity issues. And, last but not least, IPDPS\u0026rsquo;18 was in the beautiful city of Vancouver, Canada.
