{"60628":{"#nid":"60628","#data":{"type":"event","title":"GVU Brown Bag: Ayman Shamma","body":[{"value":"\u003Cstrong\u003EAbstract:\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\n                    \u003Cp\u003EThe things we do together spawn conversations; \ngathering with our friends and families to watch programs, concerts, and\n events, we share the experience through backchannel conversations, \nsocial asides and mutual displays of agreement and disagreement. How do \nthese sharing of experiences in turn shape how we understand the actual \nevent?\u0026nbsp; In this talk, I will present three real-world applications \ndesigned to facilitate synchronous conversations while sharing media.\u0026nbsp; \nFirst, I will examine how people use status updates, like on Twitter, \nwhile they watch political events on TV.\u0026nbsp; Second, I will discuss a \nsystem for synchronized video sharing over Instant Messenger called \nZync.\u0026nbsp; In particular, I will demonstrate methods for segmentation, \nsummarization and categorization of video media after the sharing event \nhas already passed.\u0026nbsp; Finally I will describe Graffiti Dance\u2014a \nparticipatory installation presented at the Berkeley Art Museum which \nconstructs a real-time performance between online media, the audience, \nand modern dance.\u0026nbsp; Throughout the talk, I will discuss how these \nexamples extend online infrastructures to build highly connected \nexperiences.\u003C\/p\u003E\n        \n        \n\n\n    \n            \n                      \n              \u003Cstrong\u003EBio:\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\n                    \u003Cp\u003EDavid Ayman Shamma is a research scientist in the\n Microeconomics and Social Systems group at Yahoo! Research. His \nresearch interests include digital expression, creativity frameworks, \ninteraction design and media sharing as well as community-centric \nmultimedia. His research focuses on understanding creativity and \nconversation as well as building new creative models and sharing tools.\u0026nbsp;\n Additionally, Ayman creates media art installations which have been \nreviewed by The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, and \nChicago Magazine and exhibited internationally, including the Berkeley \nArt Museum (BAMPFA), Second City Chicago, SIGGRAPH ETECH, Chicago Improv\n Festival, Wired NextFest and NextMusic.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\nAyman holds a B.S.\/M.S. from the Institute for Human and Machine \nCognition at The University of West Florida and a Ph.D. in Computer \nScience from the Intelligent Information Laboratory at Northwestern \nUniversity. He has taught at the Medill School of Journalism as well as \nin several Computer Science and Studio Art departments.
