Miracle is\nstudying randomized algorithms and Markov chains in the School of Computer\nScience in the College of Computing, while Shearer is investigating sustainable\nconcrete materials technology in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering\nin the College of Engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMiracle and Shearer are two of 150 students selected by the\nDepartment of Energy to receive the fellowship this year. Each graduate fellow\nwill be provided with tuition, living expenses and research support for three\nyears for study at academic institutions across the country.\u0026nbsp; The new\nfellowship program is designed to strengthen the nation\u0027s scientific workforce\nby providing support to young students during the formative years of their\nresearch.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0022The exceptionally talented students selected as\ngraduate fellows are part of our nation\u0027s next generation of scientific and\ntechnical leaders,\u0022 said U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu.\u0026nbsp;\n\u0022This investment in the training of scientists and engineers is part of\nthe administration\u0027s continued effort to ensure that America has the scientific\nand engineering workforce we need to secure our energy future and our continued\neconomic competitiveness.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe goal of the fellowship program is to encourage students\nto pursue graduate degrees in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics,\nengineering and environmental and computer sciences fields that will prepare\nstudents for careers that can make significant contributions in\ndiscovery-driven science and science for national needs in energy and the\nenvironment. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EEach fellow will be provided $50,500 per year for up to\nthree years to support tuition, living expenses, research materials and travel\nto research conferences or to Department of Energy scientific user\nfacilities.\u0026nbsp;
