60524 profile 1282475869 1352737935 <![CDATA[Tim Frank]]> Tim Frank was born outside of Washington, D.C., in 1976. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 2000, and earned his Master of Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2004.   He is a practicing architect and a site-specific artist who founded his multi-disciplinary studio, TIM FRANK ARCHITECTURE in 2005.  He has served as an adjunct faculty member within the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology since 2004.  Through the combination of research and practice, his work examines issues of technology, body, and place.  His research has been featured in numerous publications and venues including the 2008 Acoustical Society of America and European Acoustics Association joint international conference in Paris, France where he presented, “Auditory Sketching”.  His work has been exhibited in many museums and galleries including his solo exhibition of work entitled, “Sense & Sustain-ability” at the Museum of Design Atlanta in 2010.  He is the recipient of several design awards including first prize in the AIA 48hr design competition in 2009 and the Faculty Award for Professional Promise in 2000.

]]> Architectural spaces are perceived through embodied experience that is made up of both visual and non-visual stimuli.  However, a designer’s primary means to study and communicate architectural space has traditionally contained a deeply visual bias which has limited the designer from extending the exploration of space beyond the visual realm.  And yet thanks to practices in new media technology that have emerged over the past decade, our capacity to explore the non-visual aspects of space during design has grown.  Tim Frank’s research explores the body and electronic media technology as extensively theorized in the late 20th century and questions how new modes of media are enabling architects to better visualize the non-visual conditions of architectural space.  His current investigations question how architects in the 21st century can utilize new media technology to explore, test, and communicate ways of understanding the multi-sensory experience within architectural space.
