{"604645":{"#nid":"604645","#data":{"type":"news","title":"College of Computing Sends Ph.D., Online Master\u2019s Students to Women in Cybersecurity Conference Chicago","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThis year\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.wicys.net\/\u0022\u003EWomen in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) Conference\u003C\/a\u003E was bigger and better attended than ever before, much like the cybersecurity industry at large. In celebration of the Georgia Tech College of Computing\u0026rsquo;s role at the forefront of this booming field, the College took the lead in sending, for the first time, students on scholarship to attend the conference, as well as hosting a celebration for online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCS) students from the Chicago-area.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHeld in Chicago from March 23-24, WiCyS drew some 4,000 attendees and more than 50 sponsors--both corporate and academic--including the College of Computing. The four student scholar representatives sent by the College were Tina Fatouros (OMSCS), Jenna McGrath (Ph.D. Public Policy), Stacey Truex (Ph.D. Computer Science), and Chenzi Wang (OMSCS). Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy meals and network with other women in the field of cybersecurity, attend technical and career-focused talks like \u0026ldquo;Practical Network Forensics,\u0026rdquo; \u0026ldquo;Teaching Cyber Ethics and Societal Impacts in Introduction Computing Courses,\u0026rdquo; and \u0026ldquo;Watson for Cybersecurity and IBM\u0026rsquo;s Cyber Range,\u0026rdquo; and also take advantage of the conference\u0026rsquo;s Career Fair, at which the College hosted a recruitment booth.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Overall, it was a great conference and definitely worth the time to attend,\u0026rdquo; said Fatouros, who works in security and compliance for AT\u0026amp;T. \u0026ldquo;There was a good mix of students, professionals, and teaching faculty attending, which provided many opportunities to interact and network. I was able to pick up job-relevant information from all of the sessions, including workshops, distinguished speakers, and lightning talks. I work in cybersecurity and left WiCyS more focused and encouraged about the many challenging, rewarding, and attainable opportunities in my field.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile in Chicago, the College of Computing and Wenke Lee, co-executive director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cyber.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInstitute for Information Security \u0026amp; Privacy (IISP)\u003C\/a\u003E, hosted a celebration for local OMSCS students and College alumni. The event was held at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, and the 35 attendees enjoyed an evening of celebration with their fellow students -- many of whom met in person for the first time.
