{"603605":{"#nid":"603605","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Nearly 8,000 Invited to Become Yellow Jackets This Year","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EOver the weekend, thousands of students found out if they were invited to join Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s next incoming class.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERegular Decision applicants were notified Saturday, March 10. In total, between Early Action and Regular Decision rounds, nearly 8,000 students from around the world were offered admission.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis year was Tech\u0026rsquo;s largest applicant pool in history at more than 35,600. Applications increased 13 percent (an additional 4,000), with an 11 percent increase from Georgia residents. This year\u0026rsquo;s overall admit rate is 22 percent.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia admits have more widespread distribution across the state than ever before. That can be attributed in part to the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/admission.gatech.edu\/gtscholars\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Scholars\u003C\/a\u003E program, which offers admission to valedictorians and salutatorians from Georgia high schools.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EStill, those within Undergraduate Admission realize that more applicants can also mean more disappointments. Each application is reviewed by at least two people, and faculty from all six colleges are involved in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/admission.gatech.edu\/transfer\/holistic-review-process\u0022\u003Eholistic review\u003C\/a\u003E process in both rounds of admission.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;These are difficult decisions that we\u0026rsquo;ve reviewed thoroughly, but the process only reinforces how tough it is,\u0026rdquo; said Rick Clark, director of Undergraduate Admission. \u0026ldquo;We bemoan the fact that we have to deny so many talented students.\u0026rdquo; Many students not offered admission as first-year students, though, pursue one of Tech\u0026#39;s various \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/admission.gatech.edu\/transfer\/transfer-pathway-programs\u0022\u003Etransfer pathway programs\u003C\/a\u003E. Tech enrolls 1,000 transfer students each year.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor the first time this year, students applying to the industrial design and architecture programs were required to submit portfolios as part of their applications, a requirement that was instituted for music technology applicants last year.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAround 300 first-year students each year participate in Tech\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/summer.gatech.edu\/summer-first-year-students\u0022\u003Esummer program\u003C\/a\u003E, which lets them begin their college experience a semester early. This year, tuition costs have been \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.news.gatech.edu\/2018\/02\/14\/summer-tuition-will-be-charged-credit-hour\u0022\u003Ereduced for summer semester\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring the next month, Admission will host more than triple its usual number of programs for admitted students, helping them make the decision of whether to enroll this fall.
