Georgia Public Defender Internship

Position: Extern/Intern - Central Office Appellate Division

Location: GPDSC Central Appellate Division

http://www.gapubdef.org/index.php/employment/internships/81-position-extern-intern

The Appellate Division of the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council is providing opportunities for motivated law students to gain hands-on experience representing indigent defendants on criminal appeals.

Interns and externs will partner with experienced appellate attorneys to review trial court records, analyze legal issues, draft pleadings, and attend court proceedings in actual criminal cases from the motion to new trial level through direct appeal. Students will also watch oral arguments first-hand in the Court of Appeals of Georgia, one of the busiest intermediate appellate courts in the country, as well as this state’s highest court, the Supreme Court of Georgia.

The majority of positions are available in the main Appellate Division office, located in the heart of downtown Atlanta in the State Bar of Georgia Headquarters, just minutes from CNN Center and Centennial Olympic Park. Limited positions are also available in the Division’s satellite offices, including the following judicial circuits: Macon, Ogeechee (Statesboro), South Georgia (Bainbridge), Southwestern (Americus), and the Metro Conflict Defender’s Office (Decatur).

The Appellate Division is recruiting at all levels (1Ls to 3Ls, graduates, experienced professionals who want to try something new) and accepts applicants with a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. While a criminal law background is not a prerequisite, applicants who have taken evidence, criminal law, or constitutional law classes are preferred.

Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter to:
