Data science is the rocket, but machine learning is the fuel that is propelling us forward,\u0026rdquo; said ML@GT Director \u003Cstrong\u003EIrfan Essa\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The field crosses a wide variety of disciplines so Georgia Tech is an ideal setting to build a home for thought leaders and train the next generation in machine learning.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAlgorithms and bias\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe day began with an informal discussion over breakfast with Essa and \u003Cstrong\u003ECharles Isbell\u003C\/strong\u003E, executive associate dean and professor in the College of Computing.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Developers tend to walk around feeling objective because it\u0026rsquo;s the algorithm that is determining the answer,\u0026rdquo; Isbell said in response to a question relating to the ethical aspects of machine learning.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;However, they need to ensure no bias is being introduced. The algorithms they create need to be \u0026lsquo;inspectable\u0026rsquo; and must be able to explain their answers.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EFeatured presentations\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFollowing an update from the ML@GT leadership team about current research projects, recent achievements, and plans for the coming year, attendees were treated to lunch and a presentation from Princeton University\u0026rsquo;s \u003Cstrong\u003ESanjeev Arora\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EArora, the Charles C. Fitzmorris Professor of Computer Science at Princeton, explored the mysteries of deep learning as he shared his thoughts on \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1706.08224.pdf\u0022\u003Egenerative adversarial nets (GANs)\u003C\/a\u003E and their efficacy in learning from relatively small data sets. Associate Professor Joelle Pineau from McGill University followed Arora. Her remarks circled back to \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1711.09050.pdf\u0022\u003Eethical issues raised by artificial intelligence agents\u003C\/a\u003E, such as chatbots.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EML@GT\u0026rsquo;s day of discussion wrapped up with another informal chat session and a reception in the Klaus Atrium.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EML@GT is an interdisciplinary research center launched in July 2016.
