Peer Coaching Program

Are you interested in developing your knowledge and skills to help support your Tech peers and greater Tech community? Are you looking to make a long-lasting impact and interested in mental health issues? The Counseling Center is looking for enrolled undergraduate or graduate students (who have completed at least three undergraduate semesters and have been enrolled at Tech for at least two semesters) to become a part of the Peer Coaching Program. The Peer Coaching Program (PCP) was developed by the Counseling Center to offer an innovative way for Tech students to access a unique type of support to facilitate academic and personal success. The PCP trains Tech students to provide one-on-one support and education to their GT peers and offers Peer Coaches ongoing supervision in the provision of these services. Services provided by the PCP are considered consultation services, as opposed to counseling or therapy. Students serving as Peer Coaches are trained to assist consultees in identifying and accomplishing specific academic, social or other personal goals related to concerns commonly faced in college. Applications are now open for students who want to join the PCP this upcoming fall (2018).

Peer Coaches will participate in weekly training/supervision sessions in the fall semester (Fridays 3-4:30 PM), acquiring valuable knowledge and skills, including: understanding the mental health needs of university students, understanding the role of a university counseling center, cultural awareness and increased competency in interaction with a diverse community, communication skills, knowledge of basic interventions for common presenting concerns facing college students, ability to recognize signs of distress and make appropriate referrals, and leadership and collaboration skills.

Interested students can apply to become a Peer Coach by completing an application by April 6, 2018: http://www.counseling.gatech.edu/content/become-coach
