{"602104":{"#nid":"602104","#data":{"type":"event","title":"Particle-Induced Viscous Fingering","body":[{"value":"\u003Ch3\u003ESchool of Physics Nonlinear Science \u0026amp; Mathematical Physics Seminar: Prof. Sungyon Lee,\u0026nbsp;University of Minnesota\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAn inclusion of non-colloidal particles in a Newtonian liquid can fundamentally change the interfacial dynamics and even cause interfacial instabilities.\u0026nbsp;In this talk,\u0026nbsp;we report a particle-induced\u0026nbsp;fingering instability when a mixture of particles and viscous oil is injected radially into a Hele-Shaw cell.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOur experimental results show\u0026nbsp;that the onset and characteristics of fingering are most directly affected by the particle volume fraction but also depend on the ratio of the particle diameter to gap size.
