{"601406":{"#nid":"601406","#data":{"type":"news","title":"New Study Abroad Program Surveys Sustainable Development and Climate Change in Italy","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EFor students interested in learning about sustainable development and climate change while living in the heart of Venice, a new study abroad program makes that dream a reality.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/gatech-in-venice\/home\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Study Abroad program on Sustainable Development and Climate Change in Italy\u003C\/a\u003E is a five-week, six-credit program that will run from May 28 to June 29, 2018. The program offers two courses: \u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/gatech-in-venice\/courses\u0022\u003ESustainable Development\u003C\/a\u003E (PUPB 3600), which satisfies the ethics requirements, and a course specifically on \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/gatech-in-venice\/courses\u0022\u003EClimate Change Policy\u003C\/a\u003E (PUPB 3320).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/gatech-in-venice\/faculty\u0022\u003EAlice Favero and Emanuele Massetti\u003C\/a\u003E, faculty members in the School of Public Policy, co-direct the program. Both lived and worked in Venice before coming to Georgia Tech and have ties with the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.unive.it\/pag\/13526\/\u0022\u003EUniversity of Venice\u003C\/a\u003E and the surrounding research community.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe idea of teaching two of their regular courses in Venice was driven by the desire to merge a firsthand experience of climate change and sustainable development challenges with seminars and interaction with experts.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It was not possible to move Venice, the Alps, and six international experts to Tech \u0026mdash; so we thought we\u0026rsquo;d move the students to Italy for the summer,\u0026rdquo; said Favero.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/gatech-in-venice\/program\u0022\u003Eprogram\u003C\/a\u003E enriches standard course content with many curricular and extracurricular activities in a rich cultural environment. Field trips, meetings with experts, and guided tours will complement in-class activities.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor example, in Rome, students will talk with \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.fao.org\/\u0022\u003EUnited Nations\u0026#39; Food and Agriculture Organizations\u003C\/a\u003E experts about what can be done to provide food for a growing population while respecting the environment. They will learn what causes nations to fail while visiting ancient Roman ruins.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;In Milan and Bologna, students will learn from \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/gatech-in-venice\/experts\u0022\u003EIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change authors\u003C\/a\u003E how models are used to formulate future climate, economic, and technological scenarios, and they will have a chance to test their own climate policy strategies,\u0026rdquo; said Massetti. \u0026ldquo;During a day trip to the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/guidealpinevaldifassa.it\/en\/welcome\/\u0022\u003EDolomite mountains\u003C\/a\u003E, an alpine mountain guide will safely guide us close to the remains of a once-large glacier to learn about the impact of climate change on glaciers and how this in turn affects local communities.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EStudents will live and study in the heart of Venice in a recently restored (and technologically updated) \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/gatech-in-venice\/accomodation\u0022\u003Emonastery built in 1423\u003C\/a\u003E. In addition, students will have access to the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.unive.it\/pag\/29679\u0022\u003EUniversity of Venice libraries\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.unive.it\/pag\/19768\/\u0022\u003EDining Hall\u003C\/a\u003E, a great way to meet new students and be exposed to a different campus life.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo complete their intercultural experience, students will have long weekends to explore Italy and Europe.\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/interactive-map\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E Twelve UNESCO world heritage sites\u003C\/a\u003E are less than two and a half hours away by train, and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.venice-italy-veneto.com\/venice-italy-beach.html\u0022\u003Esandy, warm- water beaches\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.isoladiburano.it\/en\/\u0022\u003Echarming fishing villages\u003C\/a\u003E are only 20 minutes away.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe deadline to apply for this summer is Feb. 15.
