Healthy ecosystems are directly linked to the health of the people in them. In this Buzz Course, a skill-building, experiential workshop series open to students, community members, faculty, and staff, we will examine the health of the Proctor Creek Watershed. Guided by government officials from West Atlanta Watershed Alliance, US Fish and Wildlife (USFW), and Chatahoochee Riverkeeper, participants will learn to: identify the hallmarks of a healthy stream and engage with watershed history; be trained in using nationally-standardized tools and techniques for monitoring water quality and ecosystem health; collect data as a part of a national, long-term stream monitoring project; and share their findings through the presentation and development of materials which can be used after the course by the partners. The workshop will include field trips to local stream sampling sites, where participants may choose to dive-deep into data, or don waders and grab nets to directly take part in the sampling. Participants requiring physical accommodations on-site are welcome; please just let us know the nature of the adjustment we can provide.
Participants who complete ALL parts of the workshop will receive a "Certificate of Completion of Georgia Tech SLS Citizen Science Short Course in Stream Monitoring."
