{"600162":{"#nid":"600162","#data":{"type":"news","title":"A Timely Honor:  Goal to Fund Sam Nunn School Chair Reached during 20th Anniversary Year","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EFriends and family of the Honorable Sam Nunn (Class of 1960 and Honorary Ph.D. 2008)\u0026nbsp;have honored him by funding the Sam Nunn School Chair in International Affairs.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nThis prestigious endowed faculty leadership chair will provide annual discretionary support in perpetuity, enabling the incumbent administrative chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs to advance strategic priorities.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe School of International Affairs was established concurrently with the\u0026nbsp;Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Tech in 1990. The School was\u0026nbsp;named for former Georgia senator Sam Nunn in 1996.\u0026nbsp;Gifts from the estate of John P. Imlay Jr. (IM 1959) first ensured that Nunn\u0026rsquo;s legacy would be firmly rooted at Georgia Tech for the benefit of the Nunn School\u0026rsquo;s students, faculty, and programs. Others joined the early effort to fund the School\u0026rsquo;s naming\u0026nbsp;including generous support from\u0026nbsp;Kim and Tom Noonan, (IMGT 1983 and ME 1983, respectively), the Arthur Blank Foundation, and the Bank of America Foundation.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn fall 2017, to commemorate the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/news-events\/features\/nunn-school-naming-anniversary\u0022\u003E20th anniversary of the School\u0026rsquo;s naming\u003C\/a\u003E for Senator Nunn, gifts and commitments funded the Sam Nunn School Chair. Donors included Senator Nunn, Joan and Hubert \u0026ldquo;Herky\u0026rdquo; Harris (IM 1965), and Carolyn and Earl Shell (BC 1962).\u0026nbsp;Subject to Board of Regents consideration and approval, the incumbent Nunn School chair will be the named chair holder.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs one of Georgia\u0026rsquo;s most admired citizens and a respected leader on the state, national, and international stages, Nunn has worked to address the most challenging problems of our time. During his 24-year career as a U.S. senator, he advanced many national security and foreign policy objectives, including co-authoring the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program.
