  <title><![CDATA[MLK Day of Service Event - West Atlanta Land Trust and Friends of Refugees]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>Join&nbsp;SLS&nbsp;and Civic Engagement for one of two&nbsp;MLK&nbsp;Day of Service projects:&nbsp; with the West Atlanta Land Trust or with Friends of Refugees.&nbsp; The&nbsp;8th&nbsp;annual&nbsp;<a href="http://engage.gatech.edu/content/mlk-day-service-sunday-supper">MLK&nbsp;Day of Service</a>&nbsp;continues Dr. King&#39;s legacy by fostering the national holiday&#39;s spirit of &quot;A Day On, Not A Day Off&quot; while also honoring the Georgia Tech motto: &quot;Progress &amp; Service.&quot;</p>

<h4><strong>Project 1: Westside Atlanta Land Trust</strong></h4>

<p>HELP&nbsp;Org Inc seeks to improve the quality of life of in-place residents by mobilizing its community-driven land trust program, Westside Atlanta Land Trust, affectionately called WALT by its members.&nbsp; The mission of WALT is to organize the community&#39;s power for self-determination.&nbsp; For more information about WALT, visit&nbsp;<a href="http://www.helporginc.org/walt-2015.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.helporginc.org/walt-2015.html.&nbsp;</a></p>

<p>Participants will assist with cleaning an outdoor classroom and&nbsp;learning garden by removing&nbsp;debris, assembling raised garden beds and painting. This work will provide beautification of a public&nbsp;greenspace.</p>

<p>**This is an outdoor project**&nbsp;Wear closed toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty.&nbsp;Bring a reusable water bottle and rain jacket, in case of rain.</p>

<h4><strong>Project 2: Friends of Refugees</strong></h4>

<p>Founded in 1995, Friends of Refugees works to empower refugees through opportunities for well-being, education, and employment.&nbsp; Participants for this project will be helping to reset garden plots to prepare for the upcoming growing season.&nbsp; This may include pulling apart fencing, moving logs or other tree materials, and marking new lines for the next year.</p>

<p>**This is an outdoor project**&nbsp;Wear closed toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty.&nbsp;Bring a reusable water bottle and rain jacket, in case of rain.&nbsp; There are no bathrooms on site.</p>

<p>Check-in for BOTH projects begins at 7:45 at the Student Center Ballroom. The project will stretch from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM, and meals (breakfast &amp; lunch) and transportation are provided for participants.&nbsp; Registration is limited.</p>
