HSOC Leads National Society for History and Technology Meeting

Three faculty members and five graduate students in the School of History and Sociology (HSOC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology participated in the 2017 annual meeting of the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT), held October 26 - 29 in Philadelphia.

Kranzberg Professor John Krige and school chair Eric Schatzberg presented papers at panels and round tables on subjects ranging from the concept of technology during the 1960s to export controls during the Cold War. Krige oversaw and organized the meeting as president of SHOT and hosted various receptions including the Graduate Student Party sponsored by HSOC. HSOC professor Kristie Macrakis also attended the meeting.

HSOC graduate students Kera Allen, Mario Biachini, Alice Clifton, Joe Lupton, and Christopher Zakroff organized panels and presented papers on messenger pigeons, supersonic air travel in the Soviet Union, container shipping, race and gender in the workforce and model trains, and the utopian future in East Germany. Several other graduate students in HSOC attended the meeting, including Jonah Bea-Taylor and Peter Westin.

In addition to the representatives from HSOC, Anne Pollock, associate professor of Science, Technology, and Culture in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC), also presented a paper.

SHOT is dedicated to the historical study of technology and its relations with politics, economics, labor, business, the environment, public policy, science, and the arts.

Both the School of History and Sociology and the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, are units in Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen college of Liberal Arts.
