So far, in 2017, flooding has been responsible for half of the deaths and half of the economic damages from climate-related disasters.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHouston is just the latest example.\u0026nbsp; A recent project produced by Ph.D. students \u003Cstrong\u003EAmrita Gupta\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003ECaleb Robinson\u003C\/strong\u003E, along with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Computational Science and Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E Assistant Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EBistra Dilkina\u003C\/strong\u003E, aims to alleviate and address this issue by outlining a framework needed to develop and maintain resilient road networks, while supporting multiple sustainable goals. The team also enlisted the help of Lingzi Hong, Ricardo Macias, Brendon Machado and Keyan Halperin, participants in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/dssg-atl.io\/\u0022\u003EData Science for Social Good\u003C\/a\u003E (DSSG-ATL) summer program held at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe project \u0026ndash; \u003Cem\u003EPredicting and Alleviating Road Flooding for Climate Mitigation\u003C\/em\u003E \u0026ndash; \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.unglobalpulse.org\/winners-of-D4CA-announced-during-COP23\u0022\u003Ewon the Thematic Award\u003C\/a\u003E in Climate Adaptation for the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.dataforclimateaction.org\/\u0022\u003EUnited Nations (UN) Data for Climate Action Challenge\u003C\/a\u003E, an unprecedented open data innovation competition to leverage big data and analytics for social good. The official announcement was made Sunday, Nov. 12 at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cop-23.org\/\u0022\u003EUN Sustainability Innovation Forum\u003C\/a\u003E. Robinson traveled to Bonn, Germany to receive the award on behalf of the team at the forum, which served as a companion event to the annual \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/cop23\/\u0022\u003EUN Conference COP23\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe high-level event featured discussions and examples of data-driven innovations to accelerate climate solutions and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by speakers from the UN, Western Digital, Twitter, Tableau, World Resources Institute, and more.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;We are always looking for ways to apply methods from computer science to problems in sustainability in our research group. The UN Data for Climate Action Challenge was an amazing opportunity to do just that, with the added benefit of having access to high-quality data that is often difficult to obtain otherwise,\u0026rdquo; said Gupta.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe project details how to make a computational framework to determine how best to improve the flood resilience of the road networks in an area under different flooding scenarios. The team from \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech\u003C\/a\u003E believes this will help support multiple goals including alleviating poverty in low-income countries by reducing disaster risk and by providing reliable access to healthcare, education, and financial services.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAccording to Dilkina, \u0026ldquo;This framework can consider different optimization objectives and budget constraints in order to give policy makers, investors, or relief organizations an idea of the trade-offs associated with these parameters. We demonstrate our framework in Senegal, by using flood hazard data from \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.fathom.global\/\u0022\u003EFathom.Global\u003C\/a\u003E and mobility data from Orange S.A.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe framework of the project includes three separate parts:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EEstimate flooding effects on road networks by quantifying how a road network is affected by flooding (using GIS analysis to couple flood hazard raster data and road network data)\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003ECompute resulting impact on mobility by finding which roads in the network are most used by people (using network analysis techniques to couple cellphone call record data and road network data)\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003ERecommend road fortifications that most effectively prevent loss of mobility (using optimization techniques)\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It is a great problem that fit well with the data provided in the challenge and our expertise in data science and optimization. Attending the summit in Bonn was extremely inspirational.
