Schmid and Huang Published in ‘International Studies Quarterly’

Post-doctoral researcher Jonathan Huang and Jon Schmid, doctoral candidate in the International Affairs, Science and Technology Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology, had an article published in the October 6 issue of International Studies Quarterly: “State Adoption of Transformative Technology: Early Railroad Adoption in China and Japan.”

The article investigates the difference in railroad technology adoption between late Qing China and Meiji-era Japan. Through analysis of historical accounts as well as original source documents, Schmid and Huang argue that variation in concern for internal and external security were important determinants of the distinct adoption decisions.

Earlier this year, Nunn School professor Mark Zachary Taylor and Schmid co-authored a piece entitled, “Innovation and Alliances.” Their article has been published in the Review of Policy Research.
