To counter foreign dominance in critical minerals, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing, Washington is deploying geoeconomic tools—from targeted tariffs to major investment frameworks with key allies like Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. However, executing this strategy introduces complex real-world challenges, highlighted by recent labor and supply chain friction right here in Georgia. Successfully securing these vital industries requires new frameworks that align global alliance goals with local workforce and economic realities.

The American Southeast sits at the exact intersection of these trends. With its expanding industrial footprint, world-class port infrastructure, and major investments in battery and automotive manufacturing, the region is uniquely positioned to drive U.S.–East Asia supply chain integration. This symposium brings together international diplomats, policy experts, and regional leaders to examine how Washington, its Indo-Pacific partners, and the Southeast can collaborate to advance economic security and technological leadership.

Registration requested.

Event Schedule

9:30 – 10:45 a.m. Keynote Speaker

A framing perspective on how geoeconomics and strategic supply chain resilience are reshaping U.S. foreign policy and Indo-Pacific security.

Patrick Cronin (Asia-Pacific Security Chair, Hudson Institute)

11 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Expert Panel: East Asian Perspectives on the New Geoeconomic Landscape

Practitioners from Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea share ground-level insights on semiconductor integration, rare earth supply chain models, and balancing commercial ties with alliance commitments.

Taiwan: Roy Chun Lee (Associate Research Fellow, Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research)

Japan: Kazuto Suzuki (Professor, University of Tokyo; Director, Institute of Geoeconomics)

South Korea: Seong-Hyon Lee (Senior Fellow, George H.W. AE 1988, M.S. ECON 1991, Ph.D. AE 1991, and Amy Phuong, INTA 2005, MBA 2014. Attendees can ask these alumni about their time in IAC, how their careers evolved, what skills they found most helpful, and any advice they have for current students.

This event is part of the Ivan Allen Advantage Alumni Speaker Series. Refreshments will be provided. All Georgia Tech students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend. A limited number of 1:1 and small-group mentorship slots will be available to students who RSVP for the event.

About the Speakers

Edward V. Byrns Jr. is a triple-degree recipient from Georgia Tech, holding a Ph.D. in Engineering, an M.S. in Economics, and an M.S. in Engineering. While a graduate student, he realized that his academic interests spanned engineering and social sciences. Georgia Tech was the ideal institution to build a bridge between both. For over 25 years, Byrns has been working in commodity and weather markets, and he currently heads the climate risk team at Atrium Underwriting, a syndicate of Lloyd’s of London. Byrns has been an entrepreneur at the intersection of insurance underwriting, commodity trading, and analytic technology. He founded a startup, held quantitative leadership positions, and briefly served as an adjunct professor. His career trajectory reflects a consistent drive to translate technical insights into market-based tools for addressing large-scale global challenges.

Amy Phuong is vice president of government relations for the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena. This position is an expansion of the Atlanta Hawks’ External Affairs efforts to unite the broader Atlanta community through the play of basketball while deepening the organization’s relationships with local and state leaders. Amy is responsible for the Hawks’ strategic government and external affairs strategy which includes managing various lobbying efforts and policy regulation. She served as Chief Operating Officer for Saving Our Atlanta Region’s Residents (SOARR), a regionally coordinated, cross-sector response to the growing eviction crisis of renters in Atlanta, as an Executive on Loan in 2021. In this role, she was responsible for helping to operationalize this effort by bringing together public and private resources and a diverse set of civic leaders to keep families stabilized and housed for the duration of Covid-19.

  <status>1</status> <created>1789397992</created> <gmt_created>2026-09-14 14:59:52</gmt_created> <changed>1789416347</changed> <gmt_changed>2026-09-14 20:05:47</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Join Dean Amanda and distinguished alumni Ed Byrns and Amy Phuong for a fireside chat about their experiences as students, professionals, and alumni.</teaser> <type>event</type> <sentence>Join Dean Amanda and distinguished alumni Ed Byrns and Amy Phuong for a fireside chat about their experiences as students, professionals, and alumni.</sentence>

Join Dean Amanda and distinguished alumni Ed Byrns and Amy Phuong for a fireside chat about their experiences as students, professionals, and alumni.

  <start>2026-09-25T15:00:00-04:00</start>  <end>2026-09-25T16:30:00-04:00</end>  <end_last>2026-09-25T16:30:00-04:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2026-09-25 19:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2026-09-25 20:30:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2026-09-25 20:30:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2026-09-25T15:00:00-04:00</value>      <value2>2026-09-25T16:30:00-04:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2026-09-25 03:00:00</value>      <value2>2026-09-25 04:30:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>

  <location_url>

  </location_url>

  <contact>
Andrew McGraw
amcgraw@gatech.edu
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>          <extra>free_food</extra>      </extras>  <location>Scholar's Event Theatre, Price Gilbert Memorial Library, Room 1280</location>  <media>      </media>  <hg_media>      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>

https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/d4L02xUS93

RSVP Now

      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="1281">Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts</group>          <group id="1285">Sam Nunn School of International Affairs</group>          <group id="1282">School of Economics</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Career/Professional development
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="10377">Career/Professional development</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="194945">Alumni</term>          <term tid="174045">Graduate students</term>          <term tid="78751">Undergraduate students</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>      </keywords>  <userdata></userdata></node><node id="692564">
The Future of Humanitarian Aid: Tackling Food Insecurity
  <uid>36009</uid>

The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs invites you to "The Future of Humanitarian Aid: Tackling Food Insecurity," a compelling fireside chat featuring two distinguished international leaders:

David Beasley, former Governor of South Carolina and former Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme

Ambassador Michèle Taylor, former U.S. Ambassador to the UN Human Rights Council and Distinguished Professor of the Practice at the Nunn School

Together, they will draw on their deep experience at the front lines of global diplomacy to explore how humanitarian efforts must adapt to tackle escalating food crises in a rapidly changing world.

Seating is free, open to the public, and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
