{"596908":{"#nid":"596908","#data":{"type":"news","title":"SimTigrate Studying How Design Can Improve Safety for Healthcare Workers","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAs part of a CDC grant looking at how to increase the safety of healthcare workers during the treatment of Ebola patients, SimTigrate Design Lab in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/design.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECollege of Design\u003C\/a\u003E at Georgia Tech is exploring how the design of the physical environment can make it easier and less stressful for workers and reduce the likelihood of errors.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESimTigrate is collaborating with Emory, Georgia State, and the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/psychology.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Psychology\u003C\/a\u003E at Georgia Tech to study how to increase safety during the most dangerous time in the treatment of Ebola patients.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nThe most dangerous moment in the care of infected patients is when healthcare workers remove their personal protective equipment potentially exposing their unprotected skin to contamination.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHealthcare workers have to spent 15 minutes or more carefully removing their personal protective equipment and working with a trained observer.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/design.gatech.edu\/news\/cdc-awards-22-million-prevent-spread-infectious-diseases-health-care-facilities-0\u0022\u003ETwo years into a 3-year project\u003C\/a\u003E, SimTigrate has worked with the extended team, called PEACH (Prevention Epicenter of Emory and Atlanta Consortium Hospitals), to observe healthcare workers from \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.gradyhealth.org\/\u0022\u003EGrady Memorial Hospital\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.choa.org\/\u0022\u003EChildren\u0026rsquo;s Healthcare\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.emoryhealthcare.org\/locations\/hospitals\/emory-university-hospital\/index.html\u0022\u003EEmory University Hospital\u003C\/a\u003E, and Columbus Regional Medical Center as they doff personal protective equipment during training to identify the causes of errors.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gsu.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia State\u003C\/a\u003E team, led by Dr. Lisa Cassanova, contaminated the personal protective equipment with biomarkers that simulate Ebola and the Georgia Tech Human Factors team led by Dr. Frank Durso has observed doffing and analyzed the root-causes of errors.
