Dr. Jan Uelzmann Invited to Speak on German Federal Election

Dr. Jan Uelzmann was invited to discuss the outcome of the recent German Federal Elections during a public roundtable event entitled “The German Election: Why it Matters” at the University of Georgia on September 26. While the election brought Angela Merkel a fourth term as Federal Chancellor of Germany, it has been followed anxiously because the far right Alternative für Deutschland (AFD) garnered 12.6 percent of the popular vote and emerged as the third strongest political power in Germany. Dr. Uelzmann engaged in a lively discussion of the election results and their ramifications with two of UGA’s International Affairs Professors, Dr. Cas Mudde and Dr. Markus Crepaz. The event, which was well attended by UGA students and faculty, was sponsored by the Program of Transational Studies and the Department of German and Slavic Studies at UGA.

<!-- Disquisition: it's funny how I write these TODOs and then never
revisit them. It's as though the act of writing the thing down frees me
