This study focuses on understanding the fundamental aspect of light-matter interactions in these hybrid systems. Specifically, the study emphasizes on illustrating the parameters governing the electronic and optical coupling between plasmonic and photonic systems. These factors include nanocrystal composition, shape, dimension, and relative orientation. Two main prototype systems are proposed. One is the solution based core-satellite assembly of gold nanorod (Au NR) and CdSe or perovskite based quantum dots (QDs). The coupling distance between the plasmonic and photoluminescent nanostructure will be precisely controlled via ligand chemistry, while the spectrum overlap between the two components will be controlled either by varying the aspect ratio of Au NR, or by altering the composition of perovskite QDs via in situ anion exchange. Another proposed system is the coupling of QD micro-resonators to plasmonic waveguide. Micro-resonators made from colloidal QDs will be placed on top of single crystalline silver nanowire plasmonic waveguides to study the channeling of fluorescence emission via propagating plasmon polaritons. Complex designs such as multiple different resonators coupled to a single waveguide are also proposed to test the basic concepts of plasmonic circuitry.

By systematically studying these intriguing optical phenomena, this study will provide crucial insight on the structure-property relations governing the optical behavior of plasmonic-photoluminescent hybrid nanoconstructs. The knowledge obtained can be used to aid the design of deep-subwavelength optical field manipulator for potential applications in photonic energy conversion, electro-optical information processing and ultrasensitive molecular sensing.
