Dr. Dhongde organized a session on Measurement of Inequality, Poverty, and Deprivation. The session highlighted current research on how to use an axiomatic approach to formalize measures of polarization, segregation, and multidimensional deprivation. Dr. Dhongde presented her research paper, co-authored with Dr. Pattanaik and Dr. Xu. In this paper, the authors propose an analytical framework for measuring social well-being and deprivation when information about an individual’s achievement in each dimension is assumed to be ordinal and binary in nature. Using this framework and data from American Community Survey, one of the largest household-level surveys in the U.S., the author's study changes in social well-being and deprivation in the U.S. during the Great Recession.
