House Speaker David Ralston along with students, school leaders and\u0026nbsp;county officials\u0026nbsp;attended the kickoff.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe initiative applies to students who graduate at the top of their class from any accredited Georgia public or private high school with 50 or more graduates. It is designed to increase exposure and access to Georgia Tech for the state\u0026rsquo;s most prepared students.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Georgia Tech has a long track record of partnering with Georgia K-12 schools to help young people prepare for college, and the Georgia Tech Scholars Program is an outgrowth of our commitment to improve college access for students from throughout the state,\u0026rdquo; Peterson said.\u0026nbsp;\u0026ldquo;While we are proud of our global reputation, we are equally as proud to serve many of Georgia\u0026rsquo;s brightest undergraduate students.\u0026nbsp;The Georgia Tech Scholars Program supports our ultimate goal to put a Georgia Tech education within reach of all qualified Georgia students.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe program will allow more deserving young students to attend the state\u0026rsquo;s top colleges. The University of Georgia also offers automatic acceptance to Georgia students who graduate at the top of their class.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo become a Georgia Tech Scholar, students must be named either the valedictorian or salutatorian of their high school. Students must submit an application and have successfully completed the prerequisite course work for entrance to the Institute.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe new program is a continuation of Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s commitment to benefit all Georgians and support economic development throughout the state.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Combining this program with the HOPE Scholarship or the Zell Miller Scholarship makes for a winning combination for Georgia\u0026rsquo;s young people,\u0026rdquo; Ralston said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERalston, who graduated from UGA, added: \u0026ldquo;Let\u0026nbsp;me just say that today we are all Yellow Jackets.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile the new program promises admission to the\u0026nbsp;top two graduates from each high school, the expectation is it will encourage other students to apply to Georgia Tech as well.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn 2014, Georgia Tech announced the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/admission.gatech.edu\/aps\u0022\u003EAPS Scholars\u003C\/a\u003E, which guarantees\u0026nbsp;admission and provides\u0026nbsp;financial support to the top graduates from Atlanta Public Schools. Since the introduction of that program the number of students from the district applying to Georgia Tech has doubled.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EStudents admitted through the Georgia Tech Scholars Program will have various financial aid opportunities available including the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.gafutures.org\/hope-state-aid-programs\/hope-zell-miller-scholarships\/zell-miller-scholarship\/\u0022\u003EZell Miller Scholarship\u003C\/a\u003E, Gov. Nathan Deal\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/reachga.org\/\u0022\u003EREACH Georgia\u003C\/a\u003E program and other state and federal financial aid programs. Students may also be eligible for the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.finaid.gatech.edu\/g-wayne-clough-georgia-tech-promise-program\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Promise Program\u003C\/a\u003E, which allows academically qualified students with demonstrated financial need to earn a degree debt-free.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile the majority of Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s undergraduates come from Georgia, some of the state\u0026rsquo;s best students are not applying to the Institute, said Rick Clark, director of undergraduate admission.
