But the small private school has only one ultracentrifuge in its labs, a situation that can occasionally send the senior chemistry major into a tailspin.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I didn\u0026rsquo;t even know how to work it,\u0026rdquo; she says. \u0026ldquo;But this summer, I\u0026rsquo;ve learned how to work multiple kinds of centrifuges.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThat\u0026rsquo;s because Stowell spent her summer at Georgia Tech with the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry\u0026rsquo;s \u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ww2.chemistry.gatech.edu\/reu\/\u0022\u003EUndergraduate Summer Research Program\u003C\/a\u003E. When Stowell presented her poster on July 26 \u0026ndash; about peptide extensions on virus-like particles \u0026ndash; she joined 49 other students from Georgia and around the country taking part in undergraduate research programs in the School of Physics and the School of Biological Sciences, in addition to the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This summer experience has been awesome,\u0026rdquo; Stowell says. \u0026ldquo;Being able to work in such a large science university is amazing. I got to use equipment I had never even heard of before.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe summer undergraduate research programs expose students to the kind of academic work they\u0026rsquo;ll be doing if they pursue graduate studies. The students receive a $5,000 stipend for 10 weeks of work on high-level research projects. Graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and professors serve as mentors\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis was also the second year for the College of Sciences to offer the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/bees.gatech.edu\/beeinspired\u0022\u003EBEE-Inspired Summer Program\u003C\/a\u003E, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Nine students worked on research relating to pollinators, ecosystems, or sustainability. \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/biosci.gatech.edu\/people\/jennifer-leavey\u0022\u003EJennifer Leavey\u003C\/a\u003E, integrated science curriculum coordinator for the College of Sciences and director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/bees.gatech.edu\/home\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Urban Honey Bee Project\u003C\/a\u003E, says BEE-Inspired participants also spend one day a week on community service projects.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Sometimes we go to community gardens and urban farms, or work on sustainability projects, such as planting a pollinator garden,\u0026rdquo; Leavey says. \u0026ldquo;We work with summer enrichment camps for school children, teaching them about the role of pollinators and ecosystems and doing STEM outreach.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECommunity partners for 2017 included \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AF2LLC\/\u0022\u003EAtlanta Food and Farm PBC\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/trulylivingwell.com\/\u0022\u003ETruly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/communitygarden.org\/find-a-garden\/gardens\/west-end-community-urban-garden\/\u0022\u003EWest End Community Garden and Urban Nursery\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.gyfoundation.org\/\u0022\u003EGreening Youth Foundation\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/adairparkurbanfarm.weebly.com\/\u0022\u003EAluma Farm\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.piedmontpark.org\/\u0022\u003EPiedmont Park Conservancy\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/zooatlanta.org\/\u0022\u003EZoo Atlanta\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/beecityatlanta\/about\/?ref=page_internal\u0022\u003ECity of Atlanta Bee City USA\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/gegirls\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech CEISMC - GE Girls and G.I.R.L.S. camps\u003C\/a\u003E, and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.southfultonscouting.com\/\u0022\u003EFulton County Cub Scouts\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517\u0022\u003EResearch Experience for Undergraduates (REU)\u003C\/a\u003E summer program in the School of Physics is funded by the National Science Foundation. It is hosted by Georgia Tech, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.morehouse.edu\/\u0022\u003EMorehouse College\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.spelman.edu\/\u0022\u003ESpelman College\u003C\/a\u003E, and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cau.edu\/\u0022\u003EClark University Atlanta\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnother NSF-funded REU program, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/biosci.gatech.edu\/undergrad\/reu\u0022\u003EAquatic Chemical Ecology (ACE) at Georgia Tech\u003C\/a\u003E, gave second-year Tech student \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/patrick-heritier-robbins-007267127\u0022\u003EPatrick Heritier-Robbins\u003C\/a\u003E a chance to study bacteria that break down oil spills.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I learned that research in graduate school is a major life commitment,\u0026rdquo; says Heritier-Robbins, an environmental engineering major. \u0026ldquo;I also gained an understanding of the high level of perseverance required to conduct research.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHelping students learn how challenging research can be is another outcome of the summer programs, says \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/biosci.gatech.edu\/people\/brian-hammer\u0022\u003EBrian Hammer\u003C\/a\u003E, professor in the School of Biological Sciences. \u0026ldquo;It was a steep learning curve for some, and they learned a lot about the process of science. For some of them, it was not what they expected.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe work didn\u0026rsquo;t scare Stowell, who says she will now study for the Graduate Records Examination. \u0026ldquo;Doing research this summer has really solidified the idea that I want to go to graduate school,\u0026rdquo; she says. \u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;m definitely going to apply to Georgia Tech.
