Klein models how to both practice digital humanities and cultivate a broad interest in the humanities. While her undergraduates are eager to perform portfolio-worthy technical research, Klein also brings students to the annual\u0026nbsp;Alliance of Digital Humanities Organization (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.adho.org\/conference\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EADHO\u003C\/a\u003E)\u0026nbsp;conference, where they present on humanities work.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKlein\u0026rsquo;s own scholarship deploys data visualization in conjunction with literary and critical techniques, calling attention to people and stories that might otherwise be overlooked. Janet Murray, associate dean for research and faculty affairs, observed, \u0026ldquo;Lauren\u0026rsquo;s work is among the most sophisticated technically and critically of those practicing digital humanities.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn addition to\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/americanliterature.dukejournals.org\/content\/85\/4\/661.abstract\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Evisualizing the culinary labor\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;of the enslaved men and women who cooked for Thomas Jefferson, Klein\u0026rsquo;s most recent work,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/shapeofhistory.net\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EThe Shape of History\u003C\/a\u003E, completed with her students, excavates forgotten historical visualization schemes.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Lauren is a brilliant scholar, a skilled researcher, a careful editor, and generous collaborator,\u0026rdquo; explained Gold. \u0026ldquo;I wanted to edit\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EDebates in the Digital Humanities\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;with her because she is independent-minded, fair, empathetic, and wise; she has a great sense of where the field is and where it is heading.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKlein and Gold are uniquely equipped to shape digital humanities through\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/dhdebates.gc.cuny.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EDebates\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, one of the field\u0026rsquo;s pre-eminent publications. \u0026ldquo;I see my role as helping to clarify and amplify the perspectives that our writers each bring to the book,\u0026rdquo; said Klein. \u0026ldquo;The field can only gain by placing people in conversation.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKlein hopes these various practitioners will use digital humanities to facilitate collaboration. \u0026ldquo;I think we will see a continuation of the specialization and sophistication that has characterized the most exemplary recent work in the field,\u0026rdquo; she noted. \u0026ldquo;But I\u0026rsquo;d hate to see that come along with additional barriers.
