Kostka is part of the <a href="http://mnspruce.ornl.gov">Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE)</a> project that is mentioned in&nbsp;the story. Kostka and his fellow researchers are trying to determine the impact of climate change on the ancient carbon buried deep beneath the peatlands. This article goes into great detail about why these particular ecosystems are so important to Earth&#39;s&nbsp;ecological health, and why they need to be saved. Kostka has a joint apppointment with the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.</p>
