That\u0026rsquo;s according to \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/people\/faculty\/yaszek\u0022\u003ELisa Yaszek\u003C\/a\u003E, professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.lmc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Literature, Media and Communication\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and faculty coordinator for \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/scifi.lmc.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ESciFi@Tech\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;An eclipse can give us a sense of awe and wonder. It\u0026rsquo;s a cosmic event that connects us with the universe,\u0026rdquo; Yaszek says. \u0026ldquo;On the other hand, it can be an absolutely terrifying moment for humans. The patterns of nature no longer seem to hold. The sky goes dark in the middle of the day, nature becomes silent, the temperature often drops. It\u0026rsquo;s a moment of chaos and flux, and it seems anything can happen.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHere, according to Yaszek, are some examples of how eclipses have starred in pop culture:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/H-R-Haggard-Solomons-Mines\/dp\/1535290250\u0022\u003E\u0026ldquo;King Solomon\u0026rsquo;s Mines\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026rdquo; \u0026ndash; H. Rider Haggard\u0026rsquo;s 1885 adventure novel \u0026ndash; has what is now considered one of the oldest storytelling concepts, or tropes, if a problematic one for modern audiences: white characters using scientific knowledge to outwit a primitive culture. In this case, white explorers use what they know of eclipses to fool African warriors. The lunar eclipse in the book became a total solar eclipse in the 1937 film version.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EMark Twain\u0026rsquo;s 1889 book, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Connecticut-Yankee-King-Arthurs-Court\/dp\/1548161853\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books\u0026amp;ie=UTF8\u0026amp;qid=1498594813\u0026amp;sr=1-1\u0026amp;keywords=a+connecticut+yankee+in+king+arthur%27s+court\u0022\u003E\u0026ldquo;A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur\u0026rsquo;s Court,\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/a\u003E has perhaps the most famous use of an eclipse in storytelling. The novel depicts the hero, an engineer, transported back to medieval times.
