The award recognizes contribution to the computer science education community and to efforts to broaden participation in computing through excellent pedagogy and curriculum.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\u003C\/div\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEarSketch was established by\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.lmc.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/0837e341-e254-5e9d-8e4b-c7ac8ee2aa7f\u0022\u003EBrian Magerko\u003C\/a\u003E, Digital Media associate professor in Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;School of Literature, Media, and Communication,\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/music.gatech.edu\/people\/jason-freeman\u0022\u003EJason Freeman\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;in the School of Music in 2011. The\u0026nbsp;project sought to improve computer programming literacy for K - 12 students, especially among women and minorities,\u0026nbsp;by developing a curriculum that teaches\u0026nbsp;them to code\u0026nbsp;through music.\u0026nbsp;Students learn core computational concepts and the Python and JavaScript languages. Using a digital audio workstation, students write code to create and remix music such as hip hop and dubstep.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESince launching in\u0026nbsp;2013, the free EarSketch\u0026nbsp;software has been used by more than 75,000 students in all 50 U.S. states and in more than 100 countries.\u0026nbsp;The\u0026nbsp;project was awarded a $3 million National Science\u0026nbsp;Foundation grant in 2014\u0026nbsp;and has\u0026nbsp;also received funding from\u0026nbsp;the Scott Hudgens Family Foundation, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, and the Google Inc. Fund of Tides Foundation. It was highlighted by\u0026nbsp;the White House in 2016 among its\u0026nbsp;Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) national initiatives.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe recipients for the NCWIT Award are: Brian Magerko (Ivan Allen College Graduate Program in Digital Media), Jason Freeman (School of Music), Greg Hendler (School of Music), and Lea Ikkache (School of Music).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe interdisciplinary awards committee noted that the interconnections the assignment makes to the music industry are quite engaging and the connection between the creative arts and computer science are unique and authentic.
