{"591902":{"#nid":"591902","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Students Brief Military on Disruptive Technology for National Security","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAt the beginning of May, a group of Ph.D. students from across Georgia Tech, all part of the\u0026nbsp;Sam Nunn Security Program\u0026nbsp;(SNSP), travelled to Tampa, Florida to brief U.S.\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.socom.mil\/\u0022\u003ESpecial Operations Command\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(SOCOM) senior leadership on disruptive and game-changing technologies for national defense.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn Fall 2016, as part of their year-long SNSP Fellowship, the students self-organized and selected the topic for their year-long project.\u0026nbsp;A team of eight advanced doctoral level researchers from the schools of Aerospace Engineering, Public Policy, Electrical and\u0026nbsp;Computer Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Nuclear and\u0026nbsp;Radiological Engineering, Public Policy, and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs worked on this project under direction of the Margaret E. Kosal, SNSP director\u0026nbsp;and associate professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs. During\u0026nbsp;the academic year, the team consulted with mentors from USSOCOM\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.socom.mil\/jsou\/Pages\/default.aspx\u0022\u003EJoint Special Operations University\u003C\/a\u003E, Nunn School Distinguished Professors General \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inta.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/7fd44b96-6ca6-52c8-9736-1ea93bdb4b46\u0022\u003EPhil Breedlove\u003C\/a\u003E, USAF (retd) and Admiral \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inta.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/1c9fd306-5c4e-55d9-b499-132b56733556\u0022\u003EJames \u0026ldquo;Sandy\u0026rdquo; Winnefeld\u003C\/a\u003E, USN (retd), and others on their project titled \u0026ldquo;Development, Use, and Proliferation of Disruptive and Game-Changing Technologies.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe students explored emerging technologies ranging from the future of non-lethal weapons;\u0026nbsp;the importance of tacit knowledge in additive manufacturing and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) proliferation;\u0026nbsp;meta-materials for adaptive camouflage;\u0026nbsp;machine learning,\u0026nbsp;artificial intelligence (AI), and counter-WMD efforts, disruptive energy technologies and programmatics implementation; human performance modification; and the Internet of Things (IoT).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs part of the project, the team created two scenarios:\u0026nbsp;\u0026ldquo;Feral City\u0026rdquo; and \u0026ldquo;WMD Trafficking in the Caribbean.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn addition to helping orient and understand the complex national and international security drivers, the class research also served to illustrate the integrated nature of the individual projects.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBridging across cutting-edge science and technology with national security policy \u0026ndash;
