{"591425":{"#nid":"591425","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Gears Begin Turning for New Center Dedicated to Machine Learning","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EFaculty members, students, and other guests recently celebrated the launch of the Center for Machine Learning at Georgia Tech (ML@GT).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EML@GT is an interdisciplinary research center with more than \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ml.gatech.edu\/people\u0022\u003E100 affiliated faculty members\u003C\/a\u003E from five Georgia Tech colleges and the Georgia Tech Research Institute, as well as some jointly affiliated with Emory University.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMore than just a kick-off celebration, the event \u0026ndash; held April 17 in the Technology Square Research Building \u0026ndash; was also an informative workshop for the 100-plus attendees that included panel discussions and a luncheon.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFollowing his welcoming remarks, College of Computing Dean \u003Cstrong\u003EZvi Galil\u003C\/strong\u003E, introduced the ML@GT \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ml.gatech.edu\/content\/leadership\u0022\u003Eleadership team\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Our vision is to establish a sustainable interdisciplinary research at Georgia Tech that houses current leaders in machine learning, and trains the next generation of ML pioneers,\u0026rdquo; said School of Interactive Computing Professor and ML@GT Director \u003Cstrong\u003EIrfan Essa\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;New research paradigms need to be established that move us from the era of aggregation to the era of sense-making and discovery, that improve all workflows with data analysis and knowledge extraction. ML@GT is the premiere home for research that impacts academia, industry, government, and startups,\u0026rdquo; said Essa.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHighlighting the interdisciplinary nature of ML@GT, a significant part of the workshop was dedicated to rapid-fire presentations from faculty and researchers from across campus. During the 5-minute sessions, each of the 32 presenters shared details about their current research projects benefiting from or related to machine learning.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA reception and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1Wp1G5iLyNSuxVU7kuO1nEdqY_CPARr9zeethtFENHW8\/edit#gid=0\u0022\u003Eposter sessions\u003C\/a\u003E wrapped up the event.
