Making Room for New Fertile Forms: Some Reflections and Questions from the Experience of Working between Communities and Institutions

Clara Crivellaro explains her talk:

In this talk, I will present an approach to the design of participatory socio-technical processes in- and for- the everyday politics of place. The approach takes into account issues of spatial justice and the multiplicity of values inherent in the experience of place. I will exemplify the approach by drawing from case studies involving extended engagements with communities and institutions concerned with the future of their localities. I will reflect on the tensions arising from working between communities and institutions and on the ‘work’ needed to make room for spaces where people can formulate values and rights of communal living. I will (in)conclude with open questions on the role of HCI research committed to developing participatory processes that align with and aspire to principles of Spatial Justice and the ‘Right to the City’.
