The approach takes into account issues of spatial justice and the multiplicity of values inherent in the experience of place. I will exemplify the approach by drawing from case studies involving extended engagements with communities and institutions concerned with the future of their localities. I will reflect on the tensions arising from working between communities and institutions and on the ‘work’ needed to make room for spaces where people can formulate values and rights of communal living. I will (in)conclude with open questions on the role of HCI research committed to developing participatory processes that align with and aspire to principles of Spatial Justice and the ‘Right to the City’.

Speaker Bio:

Clara is a designer and research associate at Newcastle University’s Open Lab working on the Digital Civics Initiative. With a background in Arts & Design and Socially Engaged Arts practice, her research explores interaction design methods, tools and participatory processes to support forms of social activism in and for the everyday politics of place-making.
