Farmer proves that academic success is possible despite huge odds. His \u0026nbsp;academic career at Georgia Tech is a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cos.gatech.edu\/hg\/item\/582557\u0022\u003Etestament\u003C\/a\u003E to his determination.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAn unstable home life resulted in attending five high schools; a tour in the Navy was a means of escape. But Farmer\u0026rsquo;s hard work resulted in not only enrolling in Tech, but succeeding in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Physics\u003C\/a\u003E. Now he hopes to add more chapters to his success story as a doctoral student.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat attracted you to Georgia Tech? \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI was initially interested in aerospace engineering. As such, I was attracted to Georgia Tech for the rigor and reputation of the engineering school.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EHow would you describe your life before enrolling in Georgia Tech?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI was in the Navy before college. I joined because I didn\u0026#39;t have a lot of options when I graduated from high school. I was working full time while attending \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.mga.edu\/\u0022\u003EMiddle Georgia State University\u003C\/a\u003E. I had enrolled there with the intention of transferring to Georgia Tech for aerospace engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat is the most important thing you learned while at Georgia Tech? \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI learned the difference between a student and a scholar. I\u0026#39;ve learned how to use the resources available to me to teach myself outside of the classroom.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat surprised or disappointed you the most about Georgia Tech? \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI\u0026rsquo;ve had no real surprises and no real disappointments.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhich professor(s) or class(es) made a big impact on you? \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAssociate Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cos.gatech.edu\/hg\/item\/589940\u0022\u003EFlavio Fenton\u003C\/a\u003E as had a big impact on my development. He has been my research advisor since I started at Georgia Tech and has pushed me to go after many opportunities I would not have even known about without him.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat is your most vivid memory of Georgia Tech?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMy most vivid memory involves staying up all night in the Howey Library to work out homework assignments. I also enjoyed the Washington, D.C., trip with the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.sps.physics.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESociety of Physics Students\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EIf you participated in experiential learning activities, what was the most valuable outcome of your experience?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI\u0026rsquo;ve had great undergraduate research experiences thanks to Dr. Fenton, and I\u0026rsquo;ve had the opportunity to present my work at conferences.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EOn the basis of your experience, what advice would you give to incoming freshmen at Georgia Tech?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWork hard, study relentlessly, but never pass up an opportunity to relieve some stress.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat feedback would you give to Georgia Tech to improve the campus experience for future students?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI would ask them to increase funding for undergraduate research programs. I\u0026rsquo;ve learned more about how to be successful in my future career by doing research than I could possibly learn in a classroom.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhere are you headed after graduation? \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI\u0026rsquo;ll be enrolling in a physics Ph.D. program.
