Outdoor Sculpture Features Kinetic Design

Georgia Tech is now home to a 16-foot tall kinetic metal sculpture by artist Mike Roig. Watchtower is made of recycled metals and stainless steel, has a 20-foot diameter, and is located on the Instructional Center lawn near the Groseclose Building.

Sculptor Mike Roig lives and works in Carrboro, NC, where he and his wife, author/illustrator Clay Carmichael, maintain Heartworks Studio. His award-winning work is exhibited across the country in public art settings and is frequently shown in East Coast sculpture exhibitions. The Public Art Committee of the Georgia Tech Arts Advisory Board selected the privately funded piece for campus.

"I've been making art since I was small, it's what I came in hard-wired to do. Working with steel satisfies me in a way that no other medium has. It is tough and durable, yet maleable and open to infinite suggestion. It is heavy and obdurate, and yet can be made to express delicate movements of balance and grace. It can appear earthen and solid, or be polished to light-refracting brilliance," Roig explains. As a kinetic piece, Watchtower moves with the wind, shifting and creating different compositions.

More pieces of public art by various artists are slated for installation in coming weeks at the Engineered Biosystems Building and the Howey Physics Building.
