The day provided a bridge between Banneker and higher education, fostering confidence and motivation in the Banneker students who brought their intellectual curiosity and energy to the campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This was my first college tour,\u0026rdquo; said 11th grade Banneker student Calle Holloway, \u0026ldquo;I felt like I would fit in.\u0026rdquo; Chavon Grazier was surprised that \u0026ldquo;the modern design of Georgia Tech meshed with the nature of Atlanta\u0026rdquo; and loved the \u0026ldquo;spectacular views of the rooftop garden.\u0026rdquo; Ny\u0026rsquo;asia Daniel and Aysha Miller both noted the campus diversity, with Ny\u0026rsquo;asia reflecting that everyone \u0026ldquo;really made [her] feel welcome\u0026rdquo; and that she \u0026ldquo;belonged.\u0026rdquo; \u0026ldquo;Plus, the Insomnia cookies were incredible!\u0026rdquo; added Aysha.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/communicationcenter.gatech.edu\/people\/joshua-king-phd\u0022\u003EDr. Joshua King\u003C\/a\u003E taught a special session of his English class on Hamilton: An American Musical, engaging Banneker students in a group project about how they might creatively reinterpret history. \u0026ldquo;I felt like there would be no restrictions on authentic learning,\u0026rdquo; said Bintou Tunkara after King\u0026rsquo;s class. And Elaine Merino added that \u0026ldquo;Dr. King destroyed the stereotype that college professors are only interested in research\u0026hellip; from his brief lecture, I could sense his deep love of teaching and his students.\u0026quot; King also gave the students a tour of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/communicationcenter.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECommunication Center\u003C\/a\u003E, which particularly impressed Demontae Barrino, who was enthusiastic that Georgia Tech students can receive professional tutoring.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring a pizza lunch, the students were welcomed by LMC Chair \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/people\/faculty\/utz\u0022\u003ERichard Utz\u003C\/a\u003E and four undergraduate students who spoke honestly about the challenges and rewards of college (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ramblinwreck.com\/sports\/m-footbl\/mtt\/trey_smith_918232.html\u0022\u003ETrey Smith\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ramblinwreck.com\/sports\/m-track\/mtt\/preston_smith_921257.html\u0022\u003EPreston Smith\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ramblinwreck.com\/sports\/m-track\/mtt\/andreas_ward_921271.html\u0022\u003EAndreas Ward\u003C\/a\u003E, and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gtinfiniteharmony.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=1375\u0022\u003ESuin Yun\u003C\/a\u003E). Six undergraduate students (Laura Heller, Denny Lee, Hannah Lee, Colton Mack, Maggie Royal, and Diana Toro) gave campus tours. Throughout the day, Banneker students demonstrated what universities hope to develop in their top students: the ability to bring innovation to projects, express their ideas across a range of communication modes, and take genuine pleasure in finding things out.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe collaboration between Banneker High School and Georgia Tech arose from the friendship of Banneker Principal \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/school.fultonschools.org\/hs\/banneker\/Documents\/Duke%20Bradley%20Professional%20Bio.pdf\u0022\u003EDr. Duke Bradley\u003C\/a\u003E and Brittain Fellow \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/higinbotham.lmc.gatech.edu\/about\/\u0022\u003ESarah Higinbotham\u003C\/a\u003E through their involvement in \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.leadershipatlanta.org\/\u0022\u003ELeadership Atlanta\u003C\/a\u003E. 2016 Fishman Prize-winning Banneker teacher, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/tntp.org\/fishman-prize\/winners\/fishman-prize-2016\/matthew-patterson\u0022\u003EMatthew Patterson\u003C\/a\u003E, worked closely with Sarah to plan the visit, including hosting
