Abstract:

The objective of the proposed research is to improve ultrasonic guided wave in situ imaging performance in anisotropic composite materials for structural health monitoring. There are three major aspects of this work. The first is to experimentally estimate anisotropic velocity and signal attenuation via wavefield imaging. The second is to use these estimates to extract scattering characteristics from simulated and real impact damage using wavefield baseline subtraction. Lastly, these scattering characteristics will be applied to in situ imaging of damage. The efficacy of this approach will be evaluated by comparing imaging results to those obtained using other scattering assumptions.
