Professor Munmun De Choudhury is one of eight experts serving on the initial council. OpenAI invited De Choudhury for her expertise on how digital resources affect youth mental health.

In an article for The Conversation, Georgia Tech international relations scholar and former U.S. Navy intelligence officer Jon Lindsay says that success or failure in war usually depends not on machines but the people who use them. 

"Computer science education is evolving rapidly," said Rodrigo Borela, lecturer in the School of Computing Instruction at Georgia Tech. "With artificial intelligence reshaping how students learn, and traditional pedagogical practices sometimes feeling disconnected from real-world applications, educators are searching for better ways to engage students."

Advancements in teacher training, AI tool integration, and data science methods, plus more, will be presented by Tech's experts at the annual ACM Computer Science Education Technical Symposium (SIGCSE TS 2025) in late February in Pittsburgh.

Constellations’ video, entitled The Constellations Approach During COVID19: Adapt & Nurture showcases how the center pivoted its efforts to broaden participation in computing from in-person to online due to the coronavirus pandemic. It also highlights the center’s ongoing social justice efforts, including the launch of its podcast VOICES for Social Justice.

The report looks at official online faculty listings for the leading 25 CS schools as ranked in U.S. News and World Report’s 2018 graduate program rankings. 

“There is still much to be done, but this is solid evidence that our efforts to even the playing field are paying off, and that we are moving in the right direction,” said Charles Isbell, Georgia Tech dean of computing and John P. Imlay Jr. chair.

Chen specializes in principled machine learning research with a focus on learning-based algorithm design and deep learning structured data. Her work has garnered the attention of Google and recently received the 2020 Google Ph.D. Fellowship for outstanding graduate research in machine learning.

Jones comes to Georgia Tech as the salutatorian of the Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy. It’s an accomplishment that means a lot to her, but also didn’t surprise her.

Created by the Constellations Center for Equity in Computing at Georgia Tech (Constellations), the Georgia Department of Education, CS4GA, and Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA), the summit was planned to be an in-person event on Georgia Tech’s campus for computer science teachers in Georgia and the surrounding states.

The center reached more than 900 students at high schools in the Atlanta Public School (APS) district, a 500% increase from the same period in 2018, by hosting computer science carnivals that select teachers could opt to bring their classes to.

Duri Long, PhD student in Human Centered Computing, joins the Tech Unbound podcast to talk about this research, and she shares some wild anecdotes from her time as a show runner and curator of some of these AI-powered exhibits. 

We are joined by Matthew Guzdial, a newly minted Georgia Tech graduate with a Ph.D. in Computer Science. He shares part of his journey in computational creativity, details about some of the AI systems he’s created, and what an AI-enabled future might look like for people looking to get creative.

On this episode of Tech Unbound, Ceara Byrne, Ph.D. student in computer science, shares how her team can predict the suitability of service animals by using smart dog toys. Yes, that’s right, dogs are getting their own smart devices to help them get ready for the job market. The research is poised to save millions of dollars in training costs.

Using near-infrared light, similar to what’s used in TV remotes, the robot can identify common materials used in household objects to better inform its actions. This might allow intelligent machines to understand, for example, the right bowl (paper versus metal) to put in a microwave or how hard to grasp a cup made of glass versus plastic.

A startup created by two School of Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate students aims to fix all that and make image management a snap.

Mahdi Roozbahani, now a School of Computatioanl Science and Engineering lecturer, and Fikret Atalay went live June 24 with a mobile and web app called Filio (pronounced FILL-ee-oh) that automatically tags photos with GPS coordinates and the direction the camera was pointing and allows the photographer to quickly caption the image with voice-to-text capabilities. 

Now, with more than 20 years of education experience, Diaz – Director for Educational Innovation and Leadership for the Constellations Center for Equity in Computing at Georgia Tech – is glad that things worked out the way they have.

The Constellations Center for Equity in Computing at Georgia Tech took on a leading role in the 2019 symposium, as well as its sister conference, Respect 2019, in advancing solutions to increase minority and female participation in CS education.

To help address this critical shortage, a delegation of Georgia educators, researchers, and leaders recently traveled to La Jolla, Calif., for the 2019 SCRIPT Symposium hosted by CSforALL. The Georgia delegation joined more than 150 participants from 13 states in January for the Strategic CSforALL Resource & Implementation Planning Tool (SCRIPT) workshop.

From Jan. 25-27, students from eight colleges and universities gathered for the first-ever Collegiate Cup hackathon in the state of Georgia. The hackathon was the first statewide competition that focused exclusively on improving the quality of life for Georgia residents.

The search began last summer following the announcement that Zvi Galil, John P. Imlay Jr. Dean of Computing, would step down as dean at the end of the 2018/19 academic year.

White was one of 21 people from across campus named to the 2019 class. Computer Science (CS) undergraduate student Lorin Achey and CS graduate student Keshav Bumbraw also earned the prestigious fellowship this year. In all, there were 94 applicants.

Focused solely on artificial intelligence, the conference brings together more than 2,000 artificial intelligence (AI) researchers from academia and industry.

GVU also celebrated the day - and hopes to continue the conversation through the year - through a data graphic highlighting some of the women that have inspired its community.

What are the affordances of the technology inside of a classroom, and how can issues of cost and access be overcome to ensure it is a truly democratized medium?

GT Computing Professors Annie Antón, Umakishore Ramachandran, and Greg Turk are among the 40 faculty members with exceptional scores and response rates on the Course Instructor Opinion Survey (CIOS). The CIOS is completed by students at the end of each semester to provide feedback to instructors about the learning experience in their respective courses.

The GVU Center recognizes top Ph.D. and master's students at Georgia Tech through the annual GVU Graduate Student Awards Program, funded by the James D. Foley GVU Center Endowment.   

Each of the 2018 finalists for the program’s two award levels—the Foley Scholarship and the GVU Distinguished Master’s Student Award—are involved in research to advance computing technology for the improvement of our daily lives. The GVU Graduate Student Awards Program is the center's highest recognition for student excellence in research contributions to computing.
