{"587663":{"#nid":"587663","#data":{"type":"event","title":"Signaling through Hydrogen Sulfide","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EHydrogen sulfide is a signaling molecule that is toxic at high\u0026nbsp;levels. We have demonstrated that the H2S-producing enzymes \u0026nbsp;are\u0026nbsp;remarkably promiscuous and that allosteric mechanisms exist to\u0026nbsp;switch their reaction specificity. The sulfide oxidation pathway\u0026nbsp;resides in the mitochondrion, generates reactive sulfur\u0026nbsp;intermediates, and couples to the electron transfer chain, thus\u0026nbsp;making H2S the only known inorganic substrate for ATP synthesis\u0026nbsp;in mammals.
