His efforts as an "early adopter," first on the Savannah campus and later in Atlanta, have lead to both successes and failures related to course instruction in nontraditional settings such as distributed campus networks, professional seminars, and integrated physical laboratory experiences. Scott will present examples on his use of different instructional approaches in a number of courses, and describe both challenges and advantages he has encountered while trying to make use of the broad array of teaching tools available today.

Bio:
Dr. David W. Scott enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1986. He worked in Georgia Tech's Cooperative Program with Gulfstream Aerospace in Savannah, Georgia, while earning his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He later earned both Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Structural Engineering at Georgia Tech. Upon completion of his Ph.D. in 1997, Dr. Scott accepted a position as a Research Civil Engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research & Development Center (ERDC), which serves as the major research organization for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Dr. Scott's primary duties were to perform and direct basic and applied research in support of U.S. Army civilian and military missions in the United States and abroad. In August of 2000, Dr. Scott left federal service to accept a position with Georgia Tech at their campus in Savannah, Georgia. In Summer 2012, Dr. Scott relocated permanently from the Georgia Tech - Savannah campus to the main campus in Atlanta. His research focus is the use of novel materials and systems in civil infrastructure, both new construction, and repair.

Questions about this event?
