Among the early honors bestowed on the historic scientific achievement was the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gruber.yale.edu\/prize\/2016-gruber-cosmology-prize\u0022\u003E2016 Gruber Foundation Cosmology Prize\u003C\/a\u003E, announced in May 2016.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe prize recognized the masterminds of gravitational wave detection\u0026mdash;Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne, and Ronald Drever\u0026mdash;and the entire LIGO team \u0026ldquo;for pursuing a vision to observe the universe in gravitational waves, leading to a first detection that emanated from the collision of two black holes.\u0026rdquo; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs official recognition of the role of the members of the LIGO discovery team, including those from Georgia Tech, their names have now been added to the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gruber.yale.edu\/ligo-team-members\u0022\u003Eroster of prize recipients\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe LIGO discovery team that made the first detection of gravitational waves comprises more than 1,000 researchers worldwide. It includes School of Physics Associate Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/cadonati.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ELaura Cadonati\u003C\/a\u003E, who is the data analysis coordinator for LIGO, and School of Physics Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/user\/deirdre-shoemaker\u0022\u003EDeirdre Shoemaker\u003C\/a\u003E, who is the director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cra.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ECenter for Relativistic Astrophysics\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWorking with Cadonati and Shoemaker and also listed as prize recipients are postdoctoral fellows James Clark and Karelle Siellez and graduate students Erika Elise Cowan and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cos.gatech.edu\/hg\/item\/585440\u0022\u003EKaran Jani\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESix undergraduate researchers\u0026mdash;Aiqi Cheng, Brian Day, Steven Forsyth, Seth Kimbrell, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cos.gatech.edu\/hg\/item\/584826\u0022\u003EKate Napier\u003C\/a\u003E, and Tyler Tippens\u0026mdash;also worked on the project. \u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of the universe that bend and distort space-time. They are produced during violent cosmic events.
