This in turn can cause us to overlook opportunities for significantly advancing our understanding of the world around us.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERichard Feynman acknowledged this issue when he wrote, \u0026ldquo;The exception tests the rule.\u0026quot;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;If there is an exception to a\u0026nbsp;rule, and if the exception can be proved by observation, then the rule is wrong.\u0026rdquo; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPatricia L. Clark, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame, will discuss how confining one\u0026#39;s\u0026nbsp;thinking to established rules can lead to inaccurate conclusions. She will cite examples from diverse fields, ranging from biophysics to gender equity. She will also present strategies to identify and quantify bias and how to use these strategies to advance knowledge. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbout Patricia Clark\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Clark lab develops biophysical approaches to study how proteins fold in the cellular environment.
