Abstract:

The objective of this research is to design a dynamic state estimation-based centralized protection scheme (DSEBCPS) at substation level. This system supplements dynamic state, estimation-based protection for individual zones known as “settingless relays” to secure their operation against hidden failure. The DSEBCPS communicates with the settingless relays via the station bus and obtains essential information from each protection zone, such as phasor quantities and breakers and disconnects status. This information is processed by the DSEBCPS to extract the substation topology and states. Specifically, the DSEBCPS performs dynamic state estimations in the quasi domain once per cycle to detect any sort of abnormality within the substation. Upon Detecting abnormalities, the DSEBCPS perform hypothesis testing to distinguish between fault and hidden failure. The DSEBCPS detects and locates the hidden failure within the substation through the hypothesis testing. Its capability to detect hidden failure in real time is used to secure settingless relays from misoperation, which bridges a critical gap in protection systems. We have implement the proposed scheme in an object-oriented manner, which requires to express the substation model and measurement model in the standard form known as the state and control algebraic quadratic companion form (SCAQCF). The Integration of the proposed scheme and the individual zone protection form a resilient protection system, which is self-immunized against hidden failures.
