  <title><![CDATA[Teaching Internship in the Dominican Republic]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p><strong>COLEGIO&nbsp;BILING</strong><strong>&Uuml;E NEW HORIZONS, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC&nbsp;</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Georgia&nbsp;Tech&nbsp;undergraduate students&nbsp;have the opportunity to participate in 6-12 month global internships in&nbsp;the Dominican Republic. Interns will be hosted by&nbsp;the&nbsp;Colegio&nbsp;Biling&uuml;e&nbsp;New&nbsp;Horizons&nbsp;(New Horizons), a private and bilingual international school that offers all levels of education from toddlers through high school&nbsp;students&nbsp;across two campuses&nbsp;(Santo Domingo and Santiago).&nbsp;New Horizons follows the Spanish language curriculum of the Dominican Ministry of Education, and its English language program is equivalent to a college preparatory STEM-oriented high school program in the U.S.&nbsp;New Horizons is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.&nbsp;Interns must be native English speakers but are not required to speak Spanish, although knowledge of the language is a plus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;<strong>TYPE</strong><strong>S&nbsp;OF INTERNSHIPS</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Classroom T</strong><strong>eacher&nbsp;in&nbsp;English Language, Math, Science or&nbsp;Social Sciences</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>A classroom teacher&nbsp;will be&nbsp;responsible for preparing and presenting well-planned classes in the subject area of expertise under the guidance and supervision of a trained teacher or academic supervisor. Teachers follow the New Horizons&rsquo; Curriculum guides within the methodology of SIOP (Sheltered Instruction for Learners of Other Languages),&nbsp;which places considerable emphasis on the teaching and learning of academic vocabulary as well as lesson content. There is intensive use of technology in all classrooms,&nbsp;and students all have either a tablet (pre-school -&nbsp;6th&nbsp;grade)&nbsp;or&nbsp;personal laptops&nbsp;(grades 7-12). Many textbooks are digital, and homework,&nbsp;extra material and most&nbsp;assessments&nbsp;are accomplished&nbsp;using the platform&nbsp;Moodle. New Horizons has developed its own&nbsp;communication and grading system software to use&nbsp;with parents and students.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;<strong>Teaching Assistant</strong><strong>&nbsp;(TA)&nbsp;in English Language, Math, Science or Social Sciences</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;A teacher&rsquo;s assistant&nbsp;will&nbsp;aid the classroom instructor while learning&nbsp;classroom management techniques and acquiring lesson planning skills. TAs&nbsp;are expected to&nbsp;teach a limited number of classes while being observed by their mentor teacher, the school principal and others.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Email Susan Belmonte,&nbsp;Pre-Teaching Advisor,<a href="mailto:sbelmonte@gatech.edu" target="_blank">sbelmonte@gatech.edu</a>&nbsp;regarding your desire to apply and include a&nbsp;<em>good draft</em>&nbsp;resume and a&nbsp;<em>good draft</em>&nbsp;letter of interest&nbsp;(cover letter) explaining why you want to intern and why you believe you are qualified.&nbsp;&nbsp;Susan Belmonte will then work with you on polishing your materials before you submit them to New Horizons.&nbsp;&nbsp;Students interested in&nbsp;Spring &ndash; Summer&nbsp;internships should email&nbsp;their drafts&nbsp;no later&nbsp;than September 15.&nbsp;Students interested in&nbsp;Summer &ndash; Fall internships should email&nbsp;their drafts<strong>&nbsp;no later than March&nbsp;15.&nbsp;</strong></p>
