ENGLISH LANGUAGE, MATH, SCIENCE OR SOCIAL SCIENCES 

COLEGIO BILINGÜE NEW HORIZONS, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC  

Georgia Tech undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in 6-12 month global internships in the Dominican Republic. Interns will be hosted by the Colegio Bilingüe New Horizons (New Horizons), a private and bilingual international school that offers all levels of education from toddlers through high school students across two campuses (Santo Domingo and Santiago).  New Horizons follows the Spanish language curriculum of the Dominican Ministry of Education, and its English language program is equivalent to a college preparatory STEM-oriented high school program in the U.S.  New Horizons is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.  Interns must be native English speakers but are not required to speak Spanish, although knowledge of the language is a plus.

 LENGTH OF INTERNSHIPS 

• Summer June 12 – July 28, 2017 (can be July 3 – 28, 2017) 
• August 22 – December 17, 2017 (Fall 2017) 
• August 22, 2017 – May 4, 2018 (Fall 2017 – Spring 2018) 

 TYPES OF INTERNSHIPS 

Classroom Teacher in English Language, Math, Science or Social Sciences 

A classroom teacher will be responsible for preparing and presenting well-planned classes in the subject area of expertise under the guidance and supervision of a trained teacher or academic supervisor. Teachers follow the New Horizons’ Curriculum guides within the methodology of SIOP (Sheltered Instruction for Learners of Other Languages), which places considerable emphasis on the teaching and learning of academic vocabulary as well as lesson content. There is intensive use of technology in all classrooms, and students all have either a tablet (pre-school - 6^th grade) or  personal laptops (grades 7-12). Many textbooks are digital, and homework, extra material and most assessments are accomplished using the platform Moodle. New Horizons has developed its own communication and grading system software to use with parents and students. 

 Teaching Assistant (TA) in English Language, Math, Science or Social Sciences 

 A teacher’s assistant will aid the classroom instructor while learning classroom management techniques and acquiring lesson planning skills. TAs are expected to teach a limited number of classes while being observed by their mentor teacher, the school principal and others.

Email Susan Belmonte, Pre-Teaching Advisor, sbelmonte@gatech.edu regarding your desire to apply and include a good draft resume and a good draft letter of interest (cover letter) explaining why you want to intern and why you believe you are qualified.  Susan Belmonte will then work with you on polishing your materials before you submit them to New Horizons.  Students interested in Spring – Summer internships should email their drafts no later than September 15. Students interested in Summer – Fall internships should email their drafts after September 15 but no later than March 15.
