Despite intensive research over\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;the last several decades, many problems remain inadequately\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;solved. In this talk I will discuss species tree estimation from\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;genome-scale datasets.\u0026nbsp;I will describe the current state of the\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;art for these problems, what is understood about these problems\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;from a mathematical perspective, and identify some of the open\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;problems in this area where mathematical research, drawing from\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;graph theory, combinatorial optimization, and probability and\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;statistics, is needed. This talk will be accessible to\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;mathematicians, computer scientists, probabilists and\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;statisticians, and does not require any knowledge of biology.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp class=\u0022p3\u0022\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003EBrief Biosketch: Tandy Warnow is the Founder Professor of\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;where she has a dual appointment between Computer Science and\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Bioengineering. She is also a member of the Carl R. Woese\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Institute for Genomic Biology and an affiliate in six other\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;departments at UIUC (Statistics, Mathematics, Electrical and\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Computer Engineering, Plant Biology, Animal Biology, and\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Entomology). Tandy received her PhD in Mathematics at UC Berkeley\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;under the direction of Gene Lawler, and did postdoctoral training\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;with Simon Tavar\u0026acute;e and Michael Waterman at the University of\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Southern California. She received the National Science Foundation\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Young Investigator Award in 1994, the David and Lucile Packard\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003EFoundation Award in Science and Engineering in 1996, an Emeline\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Bigelow Conland Fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Advanced Study in 2006, a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship for\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;2011, and was elected as an ACM Fellow in 2016. Her research\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003Ecombines mathematics, computer science, and statistics to develop\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;improved models and algorithms for reconstructing complex and\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;large-scale evolutionary histories in both biology and historical\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;linguistics. Her current research focuses on phylogeny and\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;alignment estimation for very large datasets (10,000 to 1,000,000\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;sequences), estimating species trees from collections of gene\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\u0022line-height: 1.6em;\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;trees, and metagenomics.
