{"58077":{"#nid":"58077","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Lorraine Celebrates 20th Anniversary in Metz","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoNormal\u0022\u003EA milestone moment has arrived for Georgia Tech\u2019s campus in\nMetz, France.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoNormal\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Lorraine (GTL), Tech\u2019s first international\ncampus, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, an event to be commemorated\nby a visit from Georgia Tech President G.P. \u201cBud\u201d Peterson from June 14 through\n16.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoNormal\u0022\u003E\u201cGeorgia Tech Lorraine fits very well with our 25-year\nstrategic vision,\u201d Peterson said.\u0026nbsp; \u201cWe are committed to fostering\ninternational alliances to enhance learning experiences, build research\ncollaborations and promote economic development.\u0026nbsp; We believe that the most\npressing challenges in business, industry and society cross national\nboundaries, and by working together, there is no limit to what we can\naccomplish.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoNormal\u0022\u003EThe celebration will include a variety of events to honor\nthe occasion:\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;Former Mayor of Metz, Jean-Marie Rausch, will\nreceive the Honorary Alumnus Award from the Georgia Tech Alumni Association,\nthe first foreign individual to receive such a prestigious honor.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EA letter of intent will be signed between\nGeorgia Tech, GTL and representatives of French government institutions to\nestablish the Lafayette Institute, an open platform for technological\ninnovation and commercialization in the area of optoelectronics.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EThe signature of a memorandum of understanding\nbetween the Georgia Department of Education and the Rectorat of the Academy of\nNancy-Metz providing for exchanges of faculty and students, as well as\ninnovative means of collaborations between French and Georgia high schools, to\npromote the French and English languages.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EPresident Peterson will join the 220 GT students\nattending the summer program at GTL to visit the largest World War II American\ncemetery in St. Avold, near Metz.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoNormal\u0022\u003EMore than 400 people are expected to attend the celebration.\nThe U.S. delegation will also include John Brock, CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises,\nwith the French delegation including local officials and members of Parliament.\nThe ceremony will be transmitted live to the French Embassy in the U.S. and to\nthe Atlanta Campus, where State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox will sign\none of the agreements.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoNormal\u0022\u003E\u201cThe anniversary of GTL will be a great\nopportunity to share our significant achievements of the past 20 years and our\nvision for the next 20 years with all the GTL constituencies for what should be\na festive time,\u201d said GTL President Yves Berthelot, who also serves as a\nprofessor in the School of Mechanical Engineering.\u0026nbsp; \u201cThe anniversary will also be the perfect setting to announce the creation of a new\nGTL foundation, incorporated in France, bringing to France the powerful\nAmerican philanthropic ideal.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoNormal\u0022\u003EThe school began with a master\u2019s program in the School of\nElectrical and Computer Engineering and has since expanded to offer master\u2019s\ndegrees in mechanical engineering and computer science along with an\nundergraduate program.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoNormal\u0022\u003EStudent attendance and interest in GTL has blossomed in\nrecent years, with the campus receiving a record number of applications last\nyear.
