He will become executive director of the Center for Internet Research, Policy and Application, a new center at Tech for the integration of Internet-related research. Thomas will remain as provost until his successor is appointed.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThomas has been at Georgia Tech for 21 years, serving 11 as either provost or executive vice president. \u0022I\u0027ve been fortunate to watch the incredible growth of this Institute, both quantitatively and qualitatively,\u0022 he says. \u0022It someone else\u0027s turn to take Georgia Tech to the next level.\u0022 Thomas came to Georgia Tech in 1978 from the University of Florida. As ISyE school director, he helped lead the School to national prominence as the number-one ranked program.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIn his new role, Thomas will be responsible for increasing collaboration, expanding research opportunities, and forging new research alliances in such areas as information security, information technology policy, e-business, and new hardware and software systems.
