{"570531":{"#nid":"570531","#data":{"type":"news","title":"BioE Student Anna Liu Named ARCS Scholar","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAnna Liu, in her second year of pursuing a Ph.D. in bioengineering and biomedical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has been named an ARCS Scholar.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELiu, a graduate research assistant in the lab of Todd Sulchek (associate professor in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and a faculty member of the Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience), will receive $7,500 from the ARCS (for Advancing Science in America) Foundation\u2019s Atlanta chapter.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe ARCS award is a nice source of buffer funds,\u201d says Liu. \u201cSo we can use it to fill in any small gaps in, say, specialty project materials, attending conferences, or just personal expenses.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe ARCS Foundation, a national organization of women started in 1958, has granted about $92 million in awards to more than 9,000 students determined to be the best and the brightest in their fields.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EARCS Foundation Atlanta (comprised of about 150 philanthropic women) supports scholars from Emory University, Morehouse College, and the University of Georgia, in addition to Georgia Tech. The Atlanta chapter has awarded about $4.5 million to more than 400 scholars since it was incorporated in 1992.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe awards are given to students pursuing degrees in science, engineering, and medical research.
