Institute are merging two technologies that are expected to reduce costs and increase the accuracy of inspecting millions of wooden crossarms that hold up power lines worldwide.

Susceptible to rot, wooden crossarms must be inspected and replaced periodically, or otherwise lines could collapse and cause outages. Such inspections have traditionally required workers to climb poles, hit the crossarm with a hammer and judge its condition by listening to the resulting ring. But these manual inspections are imprecise, time-consuming, costly, and hazardous.

Now, researchers have merged laser vibrometry and neural networks to create a remote inspection system that analyzes crossarms from the air. The team includes ECE Professor Ron Harley, NEETRAC research engineer Paul Springer, and GTRI research engineer Jim Mahaffey.

  <status>1</status> <created>1221004800</created> <gmt_created>2008-09-10 00:00:00</gmt_created> <changed>1475895978</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 03:06:18</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Engineers Merge Technologies to Improve Inspection of Wooden Pow</teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>Engineers Merge Technologies to Improve Inspection of Wooden Pow</sentence>
Researchers from ECE and the Georgia Tech Research Institute are merging two technologies that are expected to reduce costs and increase the accuracy of inspecting millions of wooden crossarms that hold up power lines worldwide.
  <dateline>2008-09-10T00:00:00-04:00</dateline> <iso_dateline>2008-09-10T00:00:00-04:00</iso_dateline> <gmt_dateline>2008-09-10 00:00:00</gmt_dateline>

  <sidebar></sidebar>
jackie.nemeth@ece.gatech.edu
  <location></location> <contact>Jackie Nemeth
School of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Contact Jackie Nemeth
404-894-2906</contact> <boilerplate></boilerplate> <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text> <media>
57109
      </media> <hg_media>
          <nid>57109</nid> <type>image</type>
Engineers working to improve wooden power poles

                      <image_name>tja95216.jpg</image_name> <image_path>/sites/default/files/images/tja95216_0.jpg</image_path> <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/images/tja95216_0.jpg</image_full_path> <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/images/tja95216_0.jpg?itok=gMRquK3r</image_740> <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime> <image_alt>Engineers working to improve wooden power poles</image_alt> <created>1449175664</created> <gmt_created>2015-12-03 20:47:44</gmt_created> <changed>1475894503</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 02:41:43</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media> <related>

http://www.gtri.gatech.edu/casestudy/picking-good-vibrations

GTRI Article

http://faculty.ece.gatech.edu/ron.harley

Ron Harley

http://faculty.ece.gatech.edu/paul.springer

Paul Springer

http://www.neetrac.gatech.edu/

National Electric Energy Testing Research and Applications Center

      </related> <files> </files> <groups> <group id="1255">School of Electrical and Computer Engineering</group> </groups> <categories>
Engineering

Research
      </categories> <news_terms> <term tid="145">Engineering</term> <term tid="135">Research</term> </news_terms> <keywords> <keyword tid="2435">ECE</keyword> </keywords> <core_research_areas> </core_research_areas> <news_room_topics> </news_room_topics> <files></files> <related></related> <userdata></userdata></node><node id="57102">
President Bush Honors Work of ECE's Maysam Ghovanloo
  <uid>27168</uid>

U.S. President George W.
